SEP (Sri Lanka) calls urgent picket to defend Assange and Manning

The Socialist Equality Party (Sri Lanka) and the International Youth and Students for Social Equality have called an urgent picket in Colombo, the country’s capital, later today to condemn the illegal arrest of Julian Assange in London last week and to mobilise workers, students and youth in his defence.

The picket will oppose the attempts to extradite Assange to the United States, where the Trump administration is seeking to prosecute him for WikiLeaks’ exposure of war crimes, mass surveillance operations and illegal diplomatic intrigues.

It will demand immediate freedom for Chelsea Manning, the courageous whistleblower who has been held in solitary confinement in the US for five weeks for refusing to give perjured testimony against Assange.

Speakers will also explain the enormous role WikiLeaks has played in exposing the predatory military interventions and criminal occupations carried out by the major powers in the oppressed and semi-colonial countries.

The picket will be held at Fort Railway Station in Colombo, the country’s busiest.
