The Revolution in Egypt

On February 11, Hosni Mubarak, the US-backed dictator of Egypt who ruled the country for more than 30 years, was forced to give up power. His downfall was the culmination of a wave of mass demonstrations and strikes involving millions of workers and youth.

The revolution in Egypt is only in its initial stages. While succeeding in forcing out the hated Mubarak, the Egyptian people now confront a military junta controlling the same repressive state apparatus. The military will respond to the basic demands of the population—for genuine democracy, for better wages, and end to massive inequality and unemployment—no less ruthlessly than the previous regime.

The events in Egypt have immense international significance. The desperate conditions that propelled the Egyptian people into heroic action are not unique to Egypt. Everywhere, workers and youth confront an economic and political system that offers them no future and is impervious to their interests. What program and perspective is needed to carry forward the struggle?

These public meetings, sponsored by the Socialist Equality Party and the International Students for Social Equality, will address the social causes and political consequences of the revolutionary upheavals in Egypt and throughout the Middle East.
