The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) and the International Students of Social Equality (ISSE) are holding a public meeting in Colombo on February 25 to discuss the international significance and political implications of the Egyptian revolution.

Mass demonstrations and strikes by millions of Egyptian workers and youth have forced the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, whose dictatorial regime reigned for more than three decades. These eruptions have revealed the power of the working class, which is now entering into revolutionary struggle amid a deepening world economic crisis. The uprising has delivered a serious blow, not only to the Egyptian and Arab bourgeoisie, but to the Zionist regime in Israel, and the US and European imperialist powers.

Elements within the Sri Lankan ruling class have voiced concern that similar struggles could erupt at home. In the aftermath of the decades-long war against the Tamil minority, President Mahinda Rajapakse’s regime is intensifying its attacks on living conditions and democratic rights, causing deepening disaffection among workers and youth.

We urge workers, youths, intellectuals and all our readers to attend the SEP/ISSE meeting, which will discuss the international dimensions of the Egyptian revolution and the vital political lessons that must be drawn from it.
