The World Socialist Web Site and the Socialist Equality Party will host a meeting on April 10 in Detroit to address the political issues involved in the American Axle strike. The WSWS urges all its readers in the area to attend.

The strike at American Axle is now nearly six weeks long, and it is beginning to have a major impact on the auto industry. It is precisely at this point that the United Auto Workers union bureaucracy will move to sell out the strike and attempt to push a concessions contract on the workers.

American Axle workers who are determined to carry forward the struggle against the attack on wages and benefits need a new strategy. The SEP is calling for the formation of rank-and-file committees, independent of the UAW, to reject concessions and spread the strike throughout the auto industry.

The attack on American Axle workers is bound up with a broader attack on the working class in the US and internationally, an attack supported by both the Democrats and the Republicans. Both big business parties support a social system that subordinates the vast productive forces to the interests of an increasingly privileged elite. The SEP is fighting for the formation of a new political movement that represents the interests of the working class in the US and around the world.
